Earth Mechanics, Inc. is a geotechnical and earthquake engineering consulting company. The firm was founded in February 1989 by two founding principals who worked together on designs of foundations for coastal and offshore structures, worldwide, for oil companies. Many of these structures are supported on deep foundations and are located in highly seismic areas. After the downturn in the oil-and-gas market in the early to mid 1980's, they switched their project emphasis to bridges in California; this transition was logical because many bridges are supported on deep foundations and California has severe seismic vulnerabilities. Today, the firm consists of four working principals and many highly trained engineers and geologists to provide quality services..
Earth Mechanics, Inc. (EMI) holds the record of providing geotechnical and foundation design services for seismic retrofitting of close to 1000 bridges in California, including five of the six state-owned toll bridges. In addition, the firm served as a lead geotech for all the new toll bridges in California including East Span San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge and New Gerald Desmond Cable Stay Bridge. In the past few years, our client base and project experience have also grown beyond the bridge area to include other public works projects and port of harbor developments and expansions, including freeway, HOV, tunnel, rail, and flood control projects.
Our firm remains committed to provide leadership and experience to deliver cost-effective and sound engineering solutions on simple and complex civil projects for years to come.
EMI is certified as a Disadvantage Business Enterprise (DBE) in California (CUCP# 6956) and Oregon (#4283). The firm also has MBE and SBE certificates from various state and local agencies.
