Dr. Yang has over 25 years of experience conducting geotechnical design and analysis for the transportation sector, supporting more than 200 bridge, rail and bus transit, tunnel, roadway, port, and channel projects. He has been involved in numerous design-build as well as traditional design-bid-build projects with multimillion-dollar geotechnical contracts, including the California High-Speed Rail, Brightline West High-Speed Rail Project, Oakland Airport BART Connector, I-405 HOV Design-Build Phase I Project, and Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension.

With strong structural and geotechnical backgrounds, Dr. Yang has applied his technical expertise to numerical modeling procedures, earthquake ground motions, and soil-structure interaction. He has participated in port-wide seismic studies for the Port of Long Beach and the Port of Los Angeles, as well as several Caltrans toll bridges, to support the development of design spectra. He has also conducted seismic analyses for several tunnel projects, including the Devil’s Slide Tunnel in CA, 4th Bore Caldecott Tunnel in CA, Holland Tunnel in NY, Sound Transit projects in WA, and the Metro Eastside Corridor in CA.

In addition, he developed the interface program KAMG for Caltrans to convert measured earthquake records from the CSMIP program into pier-specific ground motions, incorporating subsurface conditions, wave propagation, and foundation types for several Caltrans toll bridges. This work supported structural designers in evaluating potential damage to bridge elements through finite-element analyses following earthquake events.
